Custom iPhone, sort of

After really not liking the default layout on the home screen and missing custom ringtones I decided to hack my iPhone.. well sort of, more like forcefully modified my iPhone.

Here is an older shot of the update.. now the carrier logo is “mkeefeDESIGN” because this one was too L33T for me :) .. and one of the links off of that site offers up a way to change the keypad, but i haven’t done that yet.

I was able to accomplish these visual changes and add my own custom ringtones (no idea why an ipod phone didn’t have this to begin with)
but mine does now. Of course I must caution these mods are not for the inexperienced and failure to follow the steps may result in a sad iPhone.

Here is the app I have been using: iFuntastic

If for some reason the iPhone starts acting weird, just restore it with iTunes and you should be all set.. but
again I am not responsible in any way for the actions caused by modifying your iPhone.

I look forward to how this cool app will evolve over time and when it does I will post about it.

A curve in the Blackberry decision

Blackberry CurveWell after a few months of phone research I finally get to put it to an end tomorrow. I have decided to go with the Blackberry Curve.. it was going to be the pearl but the SureType keyboard bugs me. The size was a factor, but I found the curve is shaped perfect and is only “slightly” wider than the Pearl.

Now normally the post would end here, but thanks to Cingular/ATT it doesn’t. Turns out that because of the iPhone (destined to fail) it is going to cost me $45 a month for the data plan, which after talking to my friend has gone up $15. It is either because of the companies merging or the phone.. I don’t know for sure, but it upset me to say the least.

Soon enough I will be posting my thoughts on the Blackberry and as bonus how it works on the mac. At this time I will open the floor to comments on BB, Cingular/ATT and the iPhone.

Saga of the phone purchase

The Nokia 6682 was a great phone in its day (about 1 year ago) but now it isn’t living up to the task of email and business usage. Part of that is due to a recent outbreak of spam on my account, but it is also because the phone lacks any substantial memory.. and the screen is small.

That being said I am looking for a new phone and I have quickly found out it isn’t an easy task. I am currently looking at the lineup from Blackberry as well as the Treo and the potential of the iPhone.

The blackberry has email usage beat hands down, it can watch up to 10 email accounts and notify you when email comes in, the Treo can only do that to 1 email account at a time. The Treo offers more programs ( Flash for one :) it is a bit of hoop jumping to make Flash run on a Palm ) but at a sacrifice of battery life and last but not least the mysterious iPhone which isn’t available yet and no one really knows how well it is going to perform.

I guess it basically comes down to a battle of the Treo against the Blackberry, any thoughts on which avenue I should go down?

I would like to note that Cingular charges $30 for the Blackberry data connect and $40 for the Treo data plan. Funny since each do the exact same thing, but for some strange reason the BB is cheaper.

Does the MacBook Pro run hotter?

After reading more of those “hot macbook pro” postings I decided to do a little experimenting. I started off by firing up the MacBook Pro and then my Compaq notebook. After letting them run for a few minutes I noticed both the Mac and PC were running at around 100 degrees (f).

In this basic comparison I found that the Mac and PC run equally hot and thus have nothing to worry about.

Update 1
Note: the fan in the Compaq is louder at the moment, but the Macbook also isn’t silent.

Update 2
the case on the MacBook Pro makes it hotter to the touch, but I can understand it being a metal casing.

Here is the screengrabs from the Mac and the PC notebooks about 20 minutes after I started them up.

Latest addition to my Mac family

As the title states there is a new addition to the Macs I own. Please welcome the MacBook Pro, which you may have noticed if you visited my Flickr Page in the last couple of days.

MacBook Pro on the table

I decided to go for the 2.66ghz with 2gb of ram for video editing and the ability to run Parallels on it with no slowdowns.

So far it is performing insanely well, I have my software loaded on it and the heat problems everyone speaks of have not been an issue to me. It does get warm, but then again why wouldn’t it in a metal casing? The most important application to download is iAlertU which informs you via sounds when your MacBook/Pro has decided to wonder into someone elses hands. It also snaps a photo and emails it to you when the alarm is tripped.
